How Long is the GMAT Score Valid?

Your GMAT score is your ticket into top b-schools abroad and in India. The GMAT score ranges from 200 to 800. 690 is considered a good score and 700+ is considered an excellent score. The higher your score, the more likely you are to get into prestigious universities and colleges. Generally, you get two scores. One is an unofficial score and the other is your official score.

As soon as you complete your exam, your unofficial scores are visible on the screen. It is essentially a cumulative score of your Integrated Reasoning, Verbal, and Quantitative Reasoning section scores. Once you see the unofficial scores, you have the option to either accept or decline them. If you choose to accept your scores, then you will receive a printout of your score report from the test center. If you are not happy with your scores then you can cancel the scores, but do check if you have enough time left to retake the exam and submit your applications to the institutions you have selected.

You get your official scores within 20 days. Besides the scores of the three sections mentioned above, the official score report also includes the Analytical writing score and your percentile ranking. Percentile ranking basically gives you an idea of how you have performed in comparison to candidates who have previously attempted the exam. Also, your official score reports include copies of your digital photographs, essays (only if you request specifically for it) and an additional score report if you have asked for it.

A good GMAT score assures the admissions committee that you will be able to handle the rigorous coursework of the MBA program. Since the program constitutes essential subjects like Accounts, Finance, Economics and more, your GMAT score in the Quantitative, Verbal and Integrated reasoning sections will help the committee understand your competency levels. Another important factor as to why B-schools give priority to rankings is because even applicants look for a highly ranked B-school. If a university’s ranking improves, then automatically it attracts students who are well qualified. This in turn further improves the school’s ranking and reputation.

Given below are the section-wise split of GMAT scores:

Sections Score Range Number of Questions
Integrated Reasoning 1 to 8 12 questions
Analytical Writing Assessment 0 to 6 1 question
Quantitative Reasoning 6 to 51 31 questions
Verbal Reasoning 6 to 51 36 questions

Your GMAT scores play a crucial role in the admissions process, so it is imperative that you set a specific target score and work towards attaining it. Moreover, you must schedule your GMAT exam well in advance keeping in mind the college deadlines to which you are applying. This is significant when you apply for admissions in some of the well-renowned universities like Stanford, Harvard Business School. These universities have specific guidelines as to when you must attempt GMAT. Therefore, it is always advisable to check all the rules of admissions of the universities you are applying to.

Let us now see how long GMAT scores are valid.

GMAT Score Validity

Your GMAT scores are valid for five years from the date of the exam.

There is another question which students often wonder about and that is whether B-schools prefer GMAT scores that are relatively new or do they prefer scores that are a few years old? Luckily, there are no such exemptions or considerations given for newer scores in comparison to the older ones. So long as your GMAT scores are valid, your scores are treated the same as another candidate who has just attempted the exam. Although, if you feel you would perform better now and score higher than you did previously, then it is suggested that you attempt the exam again.

Also, if you had chosen to cancel your exam scores, then you can still choose to reinstate them anytime within the five-year validity period. In case, for whatever reason you want to send scores older than 5 years, then it is recommended that you first get in touch with the admissions office of the university before you proceed.

We hope you now have a clear idea about your scores and the GMAT score validity.
